Rules for Advertising on Facebook

Daily lives are inundated with advertising all around. Billboards, commercials, newspapers, and magazines all have some form of advertisement. Reaching the plethora of people ad agencies desire can become overwhelming.  Social networks are very poplar forms of advertising now, what with the world's adoration of Facebook.

Facebook advertising is easy once the rules are laid out in plain English. There are guidelines to all advertising and Facebook is no exception. Included in the rules for advertising on Facebook: multiple accounts for advertisers are not allowed. Automatic creation of ads is forbidden unless given permission to do so by Facebook. Advertising on Facebook must not be fraudulent. They must deal directly with the content within the page they are placed.



  • There should be no sexual connotations or emphasis in the ads. Landing pages are forbidden to create "pop-ups". An advertisement should not, at any time, harass or threaten a user.  Facebook does not allow tobacco, inappropriate language or offensive content in the advertisements posted. Non-accredited colleges that offer online degrees and provocative religious adverts are not allowed either.

  • Chain letters are not allowed in advertising on Facebook. Hate speech, political agendas, false health content, ammunition or firearms, uncertified pharmaceuticals, money making scams, and audio that plays automatically are all expressly forbidden to advertise of Facebook. Sweepstakes and the like are allowed, but only when given specific permission.

  • Any URLs in advertising must link directly to what is advertised. No fake "close" buttons are allowed, and there should be no mousetraps hidden in a back button. Advertisements on Facebook should not prompt users to send or give any of their private, personal information. This includes a social security number, physical address, phone number, and date of birth.

  • All advertisements must comply with the rules and regulations and the privacy policies that Facebook has in place. Ads cannot use any Facebook logos or any of the terminology used by Facebook. Alcoholic beverage ads must abide by the laws of age, country and groups. No targeting is allowed in Facebook advertising. No copyright infringement, no spyware or malware downloads, and no spam.

  • There should be no "incentive" clicks, nothing illegal in, on, or about the ad. Capitalization, grammar, spelling and text symbols are all allowed on Facebook advertisements, good or bad.


 


Baseline: don't offend anyone, don't do anything illegal, don't try to trap anyone, be tasteful and use common sense when advertising on a social media site that caters to everyone from the ages of 5 to 80 worldwide.
