Safe Public Transportation
With gas prices at an all time high, you may be considering public transportation as an option to get you to and from work. Public transportation is inexpensive, but does have a negative stereotype about being unsafe. As long as you are aware of your surrounds and stay on guard when riding public transportation, you can get to your destination safely.
Bus Transportation
Being safe on a public bus is not difficult. Try to sit in a seat by yourself. If you sit on the outside seat, you will discourage others from sitting next to you. Though looking out the window can be more entertaining, sitting in an isle seat is actually safer. You will be able to get down the isle quickly without waiting for someone to move. Keep your belongings close to you and take a brief inventory of the people on the bus. Taking the bus to your destination is safe.
Train, Subway or Metrolink Transportation
These types of transportation options allow riders to get on and off at various stops throughout the ride. If possible, find a seat or stand where you can see the majority of the people on the car. This will help you become more aware of your surroundings and make sure you are alert if a problem should arise. Relax and let the train take you to work. Remember, most of the people on trains also have a destination that they would like to get to without unsafe interruptions.
Taxi Service Transportation
Many people actually fear riding in a taxi cab. As long as you act like you know what you are doing, you will be fine. Hold your hand up to flag a taxi to pull over. Tell the driver where you want to go and ask how much the ride will cost. It is best to ask this upfront, if at all possible. Ride in the backseat of the taxi and view your surroundings as the driver is driving. Ask questions if you are unsure where the driver is taking you. Taxi drivers drive for a living, they know shortcuts around traffic and many ways to get you to your destination in a safe and rapid manner.
Airline Transportation
Although there have been many stories on the news about plane accidents, flying is actually one of the safest forms of transportation on the planet. Arrive early so you can get checked in and begin watching other passengers who may be on your plane. Being aware of others and listening to instructions is a great way to keep safe while using this form of public transportation.
