Safety Rules for a Power Planer
Safety comes first when doing anything that involves power tools. To be safe, it is necessary to read all the safety precautions listed in the owners manual. These rules are in place to keep anyone from coming to harm when using a power tool.
A power planer is no different from any other power tool in the fact that safety rules should be in place before operating the piece of machinery.
- Before using the power planer it is best to check the area that it will be used in, it should be well lit. Dark work areas will be a breeding ground for mistakes and accidents.
- Make sure there are no nails in the area to be planed. There should be no rags lying around; long sleeves are not a good idea when using a power planer or any loose clothing. Loose sleeves and clothing can get caught and injure the person using the planer.
- Always make sure the on/off button is in the off position before using the power planer. Never us a dull blade. If the machine is corded make sure to use an extension cord that is not frayed.
- Never imbibe alcohol and use a power tool. These two do not mix and an accident is inevitable when they are; drugs and power tools should not be used together. Always be alert when using a power planer. Most prescription drugs will have a warning on the label stating not to use machinery having taken the prescription.
- Always wear eye protection when working with a power planer. Wood particles and sawdust can get into eyes and cause damage and accidents with the power planer itself. If earplugs are warranted, as with most types of machinery, it is good practice to wear them while the machine is on and being used.
