Safety Tips When Going Hunting and Fishing

Hunting and fishing are some of the most popular outdoor activities in the world, but they can be potentially dangerous if you don’t follow a few important safety guidelines.  Learn the essential hunting and fishing safety tips you need to know to make sure everyone in your group is safe at all times.

  • Know how to use the equipment.  Whether you are going hunting or fishing, make sure you and all the members of your group know how to use their equipment correctly.

  • Discuss what to do in case of an emergency.  Talk to everyone in your group about potential emergencies you might face in the wild, and come up with a response plan for each situation.  Know what you are going to do as a group if someone gets hurt, if you encounter a dangerous animal and if someone gets lost.

  • Keep track of all the members of your party at all times.  This is especially important while hunting since shooting accidents can be deadly.  If one of the members of your group is missing, do not continue hunting until you find him.  Besides preventing accidents, keeping track of each other will help you avoid dangerous encounters with wild animals.  Stay together as a group or split into pairs if necessary, but no one should ever go off alone.

  • Carry first aid kits.  Accidents can happen even if you are careful, so it’s important to have a medical kit on hand in case of an emergency.  You can buy a ready-made kit, or put one together.  Include any supplies you might need to administer medical help until an ambulance can reach you.
