Safety Tips for Police Officers

When it comes to being a police officer, being safe is important. Not only because there is a chance for dealing with potential hazards everyday but also because a police officer is a safety role model within the community. There are many safety tips that a police officer can follow that will keep them safe on the job.

  • Always wear gloves when handling anything that may be questionable. Not everything is what it appears to be. Because of this, there are many potential dangers lurking around every corner and in any person's pocket. By wearing gloves, you can avoid possible diseases or touching unknown substances that could seep through the skin and cause damage.

  • Approach wrong doers with caution. Some people could be mentally unstable, without medication, or have a weapon on them that they will try to use to harm a police officer. It is advisable to approach everyone with caution because you never know what could happen even in the most routine traffic stop.

  • Always be aware of the surroundings. No matter what is going on, there will always be gawkers wanting a look at who got in trouble and what is going on. This could become dangerous if the person is a shady character. If you are not aware of your surroundings, it could also be easy for you to get lost if the suspect tries to run.

  • Obey all laws, as every other citizen must. This will help you stay safe while on foot or in a car. Abusing your power to drive through red lights is unethical, not to mention unsafe, especially if a car doesn't see you until you are right behind them.

  • Be aware of animals. They do not know an officer from any other stranger. Many people have dogs as gaurds and even though your intensions may be good, a large dog doesn't know that.
