Safety at the Roller Skating Rink
When skating at a roller skating rink you want to make sure that you and your friends are being safe and having a good time. Ignoring safety advice at a roller skating rink can result in serious injury. It only takes a few minutes to make sure you are safe and ready to skate.
- Know your skating ability. If you are a weaker skater, you should stay to the walls of the skating rink. Keeping to the walls will allow more experienced skaters to pass you without causing an accidental collision. Inexperienced skaters should not attempt skate moves that are above their level.
- Wear the proper safety gear. Although a helmet, knee and elbow pads are not required at most skating rinks, if you fear you might fall it may be best to put on the proper safety attire. A helmet can protect your head from serious injury should you fall.
- Make sure your skates are in good condition. The roller rink staff should inspect the safety of the skates before handing them to customers. It does not hurt to do your own safety check. Make sure the laces are not broken, the skates are in good repair and the wheels are not too loose. If you notice any damage, bring it to the attention of the roller rink staff.
- Watch out for other skaters in the rink. More experience skaters should be aware of those around them to avoid and high speed collision. Inexperienced skaters may be less aware of their surroundings because they may be focusing on staying upright. It is the responsibility of the more experienced skaters to ensure they give space to the skaters who may be slower or unsure on their skates.
