Shoe Accessories for Hiking in Winter
Avid hikers will appreciate the various accessories available for winter hiking. Some of these accessories help keep you warm and well while out in cold weather, while others will help protect your shoes from the harsh elements such as snow and ice that are frequent during the colder months.
When hiking in the winter, you will need to have the proper shoe accessories. This will make the hiking easier and keep your feet warm and dry as you hike. You don’t want to have to worry about your shoes wearing out on you too soon or your feet suffering from frostbite. This is why you will need to have the necessary shoe accessories when you are hiking in the winter months.
Socks
You of course are going to need to have at least one pair of thick socks on. This means that the shoes need to be big enough to allow for your socks. A lot of the shoes that you get for winter hiking will be up to a half a size bigger than your typical size. Make sure the socks are heavy and warm to keep your feet warm and dry.
Cleats
If you will be hiking on hard packed snow or ice, then you will need to have some cleats. They will help protect you from falling while you hike. The cleats can be snapped on easily over the sole of your boot. This means when you are in icy areas you can clip them on and then take them back off when you are out of them.
Gaiters
These are perfect whenever you are hiking in deep snow. They are worn over the top of your boot up to your knee. They prevent the snow from getting into the top of your boots as you walk through the snow.
