Spray Painting Tips

Spray paint is used by many people to add fresh coats of paint where it is needed most.  Spray painting can seem tricky at first but with a few simple tips and a can of spray paint you can effortlessly paint any surface.

  • Make sure that you are painting in a well ventilated area.  This will ensure that you are not breathing in any fumes from the paint.

  • Be aware that it is very easy to overspray when you are using spray paint.  Make sure that the area where you are painting is protected properly.  Lay down some old cardboard or newspapers to catch the overspray.

  • Make sure that the surface of what you are painting is clean and dry.  Spray paint can only adhere properly to surfaces that are clean.

  • Before painting you must test your spray can to make sure that it is spraying properly.  If the can is sputtering, then it may be clogged.  Simply clear any dried paint from the nozzle and proceed.

  • It is not wise to spray paint in humid weather because paint will not dry properly.  Check your local weather station to make sure that humidity levels are low.

  • Many thin coats of spray paint should be applied to the area that you are painting.  A coat of paint that is too thick may run or clump making the painted surface look undesirable.

  • Paint using a continuous sweeping motion.  This will allow you to evenly coat the area without making the spray paint too thick all at once.

  • Make sure that the area is completely dry after painting.  If you touch a painted surface that is still tacky then you will leave fingerprints in the paint, ruining all the work that you have done.

  • When you are finished with your spray can you should wash off all of the paint from the nozzle.  This will prepare your can for the next time that you need it.
