Steps a Real Estate Appraiser Uses to Measure Square Footage

When it comes to buying or selling a home, the square footage is important. Real estate appraisers measure the square footage to determine the value of a home. The square footage will always have value when the upgraded appliances do not. You can take a look at the steps a real estate appraiser uses to measure square footage.

How A Real Estate Appraiser Measures The Square Footage

  1. A calculator and a blueprint should be used.

  2. Measure the total area of the exterior of the home by multiplying the length and the width. This can also be done by using the measurements on the blueprint and then multiplying those numbers by the number of stories.

  3. Any non-living areas should have the square footage calculated. An unfinished basement or unfinished garage should be counted. Add the square footage for the areas in Step 3 only.

  4. Subtract Step 3 from Step 2. This is the square footage of the home.
