Steps to Cancel Your Car Insurance

If you have switched insurance companies or are no longer driving a car then you'll need to cancel your car insurance policy with at least one company. Even if you are moving from one auto insurance carrier to another it's wise to go ahead and cancel the old policy yourself instead of letting it lapse.

Make sure you no longer need your policy

If you have stopped driving then you can call your car insurance carrier and let them know. If you are switching auto insurance companies you'll need to make sure that the switch is complete. Ensure that your new policy is actually in force and that there are no issues that might come up (such as you got the wrong rate, etc.). Once all this is taken care of, you can cancel the old policy.

Call the insurance company

Contact the company who carries the car insurance policy that you want to cancel. You can also inform them in writing or meet with an agent face to face.

Obtain your refund

If you pay in advance for car insurance coverage then you may be entitled to a partial refund. Be sure to clarify this with your agent or insurance provider.
