Steps to Getting a Driver's License
Whether you have been practicing driving as a learner's permit holder, or have just turned of age, getting your driver's license requires knowledge and skill. If you have decided that it is time to get your driver's license, here are some steps to take and some things to consider.
Now that it is time to get your driver's license, you will want to be sure that you meet all of your state's requirements. To check your state's specific requirements for getting your driver's license, you can visit this website which provides information listed by state.
Here are some steps to getting a driver's license:
Practice for the written portion of the test.
- While it is commonly referred to as the written portion of the test, many DMV offices all over the country administer these tests via a computer. You will want to read the driver's manual for your state, and study the material. You will be required to pass the test in order to take the driving portion.
Arrive prepared.
- This means, have all of the required paperwork with you. You will want to bring your driver's license application, your current IDs, a certified birth certificate, and social security card. If you are under age, you will need to have your parent or guardian on hand to sign any applicable paperwork as well.
If you do not have one already, and are under the legal age of 18, you will be provided a learner's permit at the passing of the written test.
If you are of age, and depending upon your state's requirements, you may be eligible to take your driving portion of the testing procedures the same day you pass your written portion.
Take and pass the driving portion of the exam.
- You will be required to pass a driving skills examination by driving your vehicle with testing personnel in the car. You will need to be able to prove that you can accurately park the vehicle. As well, you will need to be able to show that you have mastered the ability to drive your vehicle while following the applicable laws of the road.
Once you pass the driving portion of the exam, you will need to have your photo taken. The photo will appear on your driver's license.
Driving your car is a privilege, not a right. Be respectful of the vehicle you are driving, the roads on which you are driving, and the other vehicles on the road. Doing so will keep you out of trouble and allow you to keep your driver's license for a very long time.
