Steps to Installing Gutters

Gutters are important to a home because they protect the home by diverting rain away from the foundation. Without them, they water can seep into the foundation and cause rotting. The gutters also are a great tool for preventing soil erosion and damage to the basement. Gutters can be installed with some effort and the proper tools.

Steps to Installing Gutters

  1. Calculate the length of gutters needed for the task. Measure along the entire length of the roof. It is okay to purchase extra length because the gutters can be trimmed.

  2. Use chalk to mark the areas where you will hang the gutters, which should slope one half inch for every 10 feet of run.

  3. Look behind the fascia for the rafters. The rafters are spaced about 16 inches apart behind the fascia. This is where you will fasten the bracket screws. The screw should be long enough to go through the rafters. The brackets should be spaced every 16 to 18 inches apart.

  4. Place the gutters into the brackets. Use screws to secure the gutters to the brackets. Use a hacksaw to trim away any extra gutters.

  5. Attach the downspouts to the end of the gutters and secure them with rivets.

  6. Spread caulk into the seams of the gutters to prevent any leaks.
