Steps to Join Your Spouse's Work Health Insurance Policy
It really does not matter if you are employed and your employer offers health insurance benefits at your job. You do have the right to join your spouse's work health insurance policy. There are steps that need to be taken in order to ensure that you are enrolled.
There are many reasons that people decide to join their spouse's work health insurance policy.
Perhaps your job offers health insurance, but the premium you would pay would prove to not be cost-effective.
Perhaps your job does not offer a health insurance policy that is as comprehensive as your spouse's.
Perhaps you wish to add your spouse's health insurance in order to carry a secondary policy.
Perhaps your job just does not offer a health insurance policy at all.
No matter the reason, you do have the option to join your spouse's work health insurance policy.
In order to join your spouse's work health insurance policy, you should have your spouse contact their human resources manager.
There are certain enrollment forms that will need to be completed and the human resources manager can advise you as to what forms need to be completed and what time frame you have in order to return them.
There are three ways in which to become covered by your spouse's work health insurance policy:
When your spouse begins their job, and is enrolling in health insurance coverage, they can add you to their policy.
Generally, when you marry, you have 30 days to enroll into your spouse's work health insurance policy.
If you have not recently married, you will have to wait until your spouse's employer has open enrollment for health insurance benefits. Many times, open enrollment happens in November of every year.
Again, contacting the human resources manager can answer questions as to exactly when open enrollment will occur, and/or when a qualifying event has occurred which allows for your spouse to add you to their health insurance policy.
