Steps to Making Safety Posters
Although we see safety posters each day, they are by no means trivial. They help keep employees safe, and reduce the liability of the business owner. Although you can buy stock safety posters, it may be more convenient to create your own.
- Before creating your poster, decide what type of workplace problems you are trying to educate your employees about. Is there a specific danger to be aware of? Is there a probability of a slip and fall? You must know what you are aiming at before you continue.
- Find facts or statistics that back up the claims that you will make on your poster. Make sure that the statistics that you use come from reliable sources. Brief, poignant statistics show that the problem you are facing is real and not a joke.
- Create your poster. Desktop publishing software can help you accomplish this task. Create a large, bold tag word or phrase at the top of the poster. "Danger", "caution" or "watch your step" are all appropriate. Below this, put the information that you want your employees to know. A black and white graphic or clip art may be appropriate with your text, but do not fill the poster up with pictures. A serious problem deserves a serious poster. Graphics that are cartoonish will give the unintended impression that the problem is not serious.
- Print your sign on card stock and laminate the sign before posting. This will help your sign last for a long time.
