Summer Clothing Tips

Helpful summer clothing tips include thinking through a plan of action that makes sense for home, work and recreational activities. Depending on where you live, indoor environments may require a different approach to dressing in the summer than participation in outdoor activities.

Dressing for Summer Activities

Wear flip flops or sandals. Avoid wearing sneakers or other shoes that trap heat, particularly when spending many hours outdoors. Your body will feel cooler if your feet are not overheated.

Choose lighter colors. Black, navy blue, maroon and other dark colors attract and absorb heat. Keep cool outdoors by choosing lighter colors.

Wear less. Choose shorts over jeans and skirts over long slacks. Wear tank tops instead of long-sleeve shirts. The less material you have covering your body when outdoors, the easier it will be to cool off.

Bring hats and sunglasses to outings. Hats will keep excessive sun away from your face. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from the hot sun.

Summer Clothing Tips for the Workplace

Wear dresses to work. Summer clothing can be revealing and possibly inappropriate for the workplace. However, a short-sleeve cotton dress can look dressy and keep you cool during the hotter months.

Keep clothing at work. Some office environments keep the temperature cool during the summer, leaving you feeling cold if you are wearing a dress or short-sleeve cotton shirt. Keeping a cardigan or a blazer at work will keep you from feeling cold at work during the summer months.

Avoid see-through fabrics. Summer clothes are often made from thinner materials that make you feel comfortable as you commute to work. However, these materials may be inappropriate for the workplace. Choose lightweight fabrics such as cotton in lighter colors.
