Supplies for Custom Auto Painting

Believe it or not, custom auto painting is a project you can do yourself. Choosing to complete the project without professional help will save time and money, but anyone taking on a project like this will need a few supplies before getting started. These tools are important if you want the new paint job to last a while without needing touch-ups.

Chemical Stripper

Any car, no matter how awful its current paint job looks, will have some paint remaining from the original paint job. Chemical strippers are designed to remove paint from surfaces, making them a great tool to use for baring down automobiles.

Power Sander

Since the surface of a car can be a little rough in places, good quality sandpaper and a power sander will be needed when custom painting a car. The purpose of the sandpaper is to smooth out any rough places left over on the surface of the vehicle, including rusty spots. The process will go a lot faster with a power sander versus hand sanding.

Adhesive Tape

If the custom paint job is going to turn out well, a strong masking tape is needed to cover up any sections that aren't going to be painted or painted another color. For example, if you choose to add racing stripes on top of the car, the areas around the racing stripes will need to be covered to protect from being painted.

Urethane Primer

A good urethane primer should be applied to the surface of the car before painted. The primer serves to protect the surface from corrosion and provides a better adhesion for the paint. The finish of the car will look better with a primer underneath and also help the paint job last longer.

Spray Gun

Using a spray gun is best when custom painting a car and used with whichever paint color you choose. Using a spray gun can give the car a more airbrushed and even look, making it appear smoother and more attractive.

Safety

No one should ever take on a project like this without the proper safety gear. Custom painting a car involves the use of some strong chemicals that can be harmful. Be smart before starting the project and make sure you have your safety glasses and gloves on at all times.
