Supplies for Window Washing

Windows are a necessary part of homes, vehicles, workplaces and other buildings or structures. They are a source of natural light and they offer an unobstructed view of the world around you. Because of their important purpose, they should be kept as clean as possible. To effectively wash your windows, it is necessary to know what supplies are necessary and to have them on hand when needed.

  • Spray Bottle - For smaller windows or most windows around the house, a spray bottle is a convenient way to apply the cleaning solution. Homemade cleaning solutions can be made directly inside of the bottle and it is easily portable from one window to another.

  • A Bucket - When there are several large windows that require cleaning it is sometimes more useful to use a bucket than a spray bottle. The bucket is used to mix and carry homemade cleaning solution.

  • Squeegee - A squeegee is used to pull the dirt and cleaning solution off windows while you clean. After spraying the window thoroughly with the cleaner, a squeegee is pulled across and down the glass. This both cleans and helps the glass to dry.

  • Sponges - When cleaning windows using a bucket of water or cleaning solution, a sponge is useful in wetting the window with the cleaner. The sponge is dipped into the bucket with excess squeezed out before it is wiped over the glass. The sponge is also useful for keeping the rubber blade of the squeegee clean between passes.

  • Commercial Cleaning Solution - Commercial window cleaning solutions are those that are not made in the home. There are many different varieties of commercial cleaners on the market, with some claiming to be more green than others.

  • Microfiber Cloth - When cleaning a window without a squeegee, a microfiber cloth can be used to wipe off the dirt and water. This type of cloth is lint free and can help the window to dry streak-free.

  • Ammonia or Vinegar - Making your own window cleaning solution is an eco-friendly way to clean your windows and helps to save money. This requires having a bottle of ammonia or white vinegar on hand. To make the cleaning solution, mix one part ammonia or vinegar to three parts of clean water.
