The Best Breakfast Foods for Diabetics

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day.  Diabetics especially need to eat meals at regular intervals to keep their blood sugar in a normal range. The best diabetic breakfast will include carbohydrates to start the day and some protein to keep you energized until lunch.



Whole wheat grains contains important nutrients like iron and fiber. Replace white breads with whole wheat bread.


Proteins can be broken down into energy, but no more than 15- 20% of your meal should be protein. Too much protein can cause high cholesterol, kidney and liver problems.


Fresh fruit like apples that are high in fiber can be eaten for breakfast.  Fruits that are high in sugar should be avoided.


Portion control is the key to the diabetic breakfast. The size of your portion should be the recommended serving size. Read the labels to find out the amount of carbohydrates, protein, fats, and especially the amount of sodium that is in a serving size. Too much sodium is not good for people with high blood pressure and for most people.





  • Hot oatmeal with raisins or other fruit and milk.

  • Cold unsweetened cereal with milk, fresh fruit and whole wheat toast.

  • Egg sandwich with Canadian bacon and cheese on whole wheat English muffins.

  • Egg sandwich with turkey sausage and cheese on whole wheat toast.

  • Scrambled eggs with cheese, turkey sausage with whole wheat toast.

  • Omelet with spinach, mushroom, bell pepper, and tomatoes.

  • French toast made from whole wheat bread with sugarfree syrup and milk.

  • Breakfast shake with fruit and skim milk.
