The Best Hardwood Floor Cleaner
Hardwood can be cleaned in any number of ways. There are many tried and true ways to do it. There is a difference in how you clean an older wood floor and a newer wood floor. Knowing your finish and understanding the proper way to clean it is very important.
If you are cleaning a new wood floor, read the manufacturer instructions, as new wood finishes do not always work with oil based cleaners.
Both white and apple cider vinegars are amazing wood cleaning products and work well on both new and old wood floors. To use either is very simple. Sweep the floor well, then mix ¼ cup vinegar with a gallon of water and use a damp mop to clean the floor. Never soak your wood floors, as it can cause damage.
If you prefer a store bought cleaner, Murphy’s soap wood cleaner is one of the best available. Check the label instructions for the amount to use on your wood floor. Mixing instructions will vary, based on the finish that has been applied to your floor.
No matter what cleaner you decide to go with, remember to always test a small hidden area of your floor beforehand and only use a damp mop. Moisture will damage your floor; keep a towel on hand to quickly clean accidental spills.
Always mop or wipe in the same direction as the grain of the wood. If you work against the grain, you will trap dirt and your floors will not look near as clean as they could.
