Leeks are a vegetable used in cuisines all over the world. They add an onion-like flavor to meats, soups, stews and vegetables. Leeks are very versatile because they can be used for sauteing, simmering, grilling and roasting. There are many layers on a leek that can easily trap sand that cannot be wash away with rinsing only.
The Best Way to Clean the Sand From Leeks
1. The leeks have roots on the end and dark green tops. Remove those items with a sharp knife.
2. Use the knife to cut the leeks in half. You can cut them lengthwise or into rounds if you desire.
3. Fill a large bowl with water and place the leeks into it. Swish the leeks around in the bowl to loosen dirt or sand. Allow the leeks for soaks for about five minutes.
4. Remove the leeks from the water and place them in a colander in the sink.
5. Pour the water from the large bowl and rinse it. Place the leeks back in the large bowl. Repeat Steps 3-5 until all dirt or sand is removed.
