The Best Windows for Houseplants
Houseplants can make any room seem more natural and alive. Known for their use in decorating, positive psychological effects and ability to clean the air, houseplants can be a great companion. However, because they are alive, they require nurturing in the form of water, nutrients, light and maybe a little love. To enable your houseplant to grow at its best, you should find the best window in your house to make its home.
- Read up on your houseplant to determine what type of light it needs. Some plants need full sun whereas others do better in partial sun conditions. The light conditions needed will determine the best window in your house for your houseplant.
- Determine what type of plant you have, i.e. flowering or foliage. The type of houseplant determines in what direction the window should be facing. Flowering plants do best in south, east, or west facing windows whereas foliage plants do best in north facing windows. When your flowering plants begin to bloom, it may be necessary to move them out of windows with direct sunlight as this can overheat flowers and cause them to collapse. However, if they become yellow or spindly and have dull colored flowers, they may not be getting enough light.
- Choose windows that are not above stoves, beds, or televisions. You would not want a plant falling on you as you slept or ruining your brand new flat screen television. Likewise, a stove could make for an uncomfortable environment for the plant if the area heats up frequently.
- Don’t use windows where you feel uncomfortable opening the shades. If your window looks into your neighbor’s house and you never open the blinds, it is unlikely that you will want to open them just for the plant’s benefit.
- Find windows with large ledges to allow for the pots. Skinny ledges can create fall hazards, which may damage the plant or hurt someone nearby.
