The History of Men's Golf Clothes
Men’s golf-clothes have transitioned in style and function since it's beginnings in the 14th century. There have been a variety of styles whether practical, conservative, original, or comfortable. Fashions in Men's golf have evolved right along with the game itself.
Early History
There is evidence that the game of golf has existed as far back as ancient Rome, with modern-day golf having originated in Scotland. The earliest golf clothes reflected the Men's dress styles in Scotland at the time. Tight trousers, boots and patterned socks reflected the dress of that era. Button-up jackets helped complete the overall look.
Mid 1900's
During the mid 1900’s, Men's golf clothing became more refined and a bit more functional. Since many men started making trips to the golf course to conduct business and mingle with co-workers, colors of clothing leaned heavily on subdued earth tones as opposed to vibrant colors. Golf pants and jackets became more relaxed to allow more comfort and a better range of motion.
Modern Day
Modern Day men's golf apparel has become sportier, athletic looking, and overall less formal. Wearing shorts and short-sleeves on the golf course has now become commonplace. Athletic brand-name apparel has proven to be very popular. Popular clothing items consist of collar shirts, windbreakers, golf-caps, sunglasses, khaki pants and golf shoes that resemble sneakers. Over time, men's golf apparel has gone from restrictive and formal, to more comfortable, stylish and athletic looking in appearance. Just as the game of golf has evolved over the ages, the look of men's golf clothes has also.
