The Pros of Health Information Technology
Health information technology, or ITT, is an innovative and productive way to protect patient confidentiality. Many doctors' offices, hospitals and medical facilities use electronic medical records to keep patient files, treatments and other essential things in healthcare. ITT is fast becoming a way of handling all
Patient Files
Healthcare professionals once kept all patient files on paper. They would record and store their patients' medical records in charts. Today, most physicians prefer to keep their patients' information on disks and computers. This helped eliminate medical errors such as ineligible handwriting, incorrect billing and wrong diagnoses.
Patient Confidentiality
There are strict federal guidelines in place regarding patient confidentiality. One of the most important is patients have the right to protected medical information obtained at their healthcare facilities. Most treatments, medications and procedures left paper trails that others could easily obtain. Paper files could also be destroyed in fires or other disasters. However, electronic medical records require passwords and strict protocols that help prevent others from seeing, copying or stealing critical personal information. They also come on systems that can be easily copied on protected disks for safekeeping.
Communication
Insurance companies, others physicians and healthcare entities may need patient information in order to pay for or provide services. Health information technology can be securely transferred over to other parties without the risk of losing valuable and protected information. Patients may rest easy knowing that their medical treatments, diagnoses and medications will not be misused for non-medical reasons.
Coordination of Care
Doctors can now coordinate the right care plans for their patients with ITT programs. Dentists, surgeons and physicians of all specialties can use information technology to record patient treatments and results as they occur. They can also refer back to past care by simply logging into a patient's file and searching their medical history.
