Things Needed for Going Away to College

You were accepted to a college away from home. Congratulations! This is a big step in your education and your life. Living away from home is a learning experience that you will never forget. As you pack your things to venture into the world of college, don’t forget the items on this list.

• A computer to help you with your school research and keep connected with family and friends.




• A cell phone to call home or in case of an emergency.




• Though you may not have much time for sleep, bedding is very important. Bring at least two sets of sheets and pillowcases. You may also want to include your favorite comforter or pillow.




• You will need a backpack to carry your books to and from class.




• Study materials are also important. These materials would include a calculator, pencils, pens, ruler, tape, stapler, three hole puncher, paper, folders and binders.




• Even though you may have access to the web, you will also want to have a dictionary and thesaurus available. These can be helpful when writing a paper for class.




• A jump drive is necessary for saving educational material. You may not have a printer in your room or dorm, but with a jump drive, you can print your assignments at the student lounge, library or study center.




• Bring plenty of clothing including comfortable outfits, semi-professional clothing for special events, pajamas, underwear and socks.




• Depending on where your college is located, you may also need a coat, jacket, sweater, boots or swimsuit.




• Depending on the arrangements in your dorm or apartment, you may also need a small refrigerator and microwave. These two items can come in handy during late night study sessions.
