Brushing
You should always begin by brushing your dog gently every day. Brushing his/her coat daily will help to distribute the natural oils, remove tangles and dirt, and will also allow you the chance to inspect for fleas and ticks.
Bathing
One common mistake that most people make is washing their dog too often. You should only wash your dog about once every two months using a gentle pet shampoo. Always start at the head, and work your way down to the tail. Rinse your dog well using warm water and towel dry. Be sure to wipe the eyes and face using a damp washcloth.
Ears
Always check your dog’s ears at least once or twice a month. The ears are a very common place for dogs to develop an infection. If you sense any foul odor or unusual discharge coming from your dog's ears, then you need to consult with your veterinarian for treatment. If the ears look good, then just wipe clean with a damp cotton pad or cloth.
Teeth and Nails
You should brush your dog's teeth once or twice a week using a soft bristled brush. Your dog may not like this at first, but you can use treats as an incentive to train him/her to cooperate. You should also clip your dog's nails about once a month as needed. When your pet's nails are too long, it can actually impair their walking ability. Take special precautions when clipping the nails to avoid cutting into the quick.
