Tips About Fixing Gutters
You may find it necessary as a home owner to climb a ladder from time to time and repair your house's gutters. While this does seem like a daunting task, there are several simple tips that can make fixing your rain gutters a whole lot easier, such as catching the damage before it actually becomes a problem.
- Mark your calender for quarterly cleanings. If you clean your gutters out after each season, you are less likely to end up with clogs. You can use the decomposed leaves that you pull out as mulch or compost.
- Check all gutter spikes. They should go through the gutter, through the fascia board, and then into the rafter. Over the years they tend to work themselves out and need replacing.
- Check the gutters for any leaks or cracked seams. If you find a crack, scrape off the old caulking and dry the area where the crack is. Then, patch the crack with bead silicon sealing to prevent water from getting behind the gutters and causing the boards to rot.
- Check the rivets securing your downspout. They often become loose and fall out. These can be replaced easily using a rivet gun.
