Tips for Athletic Socks
Many people think that a sock is a sock and that the only consideration for an athletic sock, is that it needs to be white. Actually, when it comes to athletics, the socks you wear are as important as the shoes you choose to wear.
Choosing Athletic Socks
If you participate in athletics, you need to take as much time choosing your socks as you do choosing your shoes. The material the socks are made of is the first consideration. For most socks, people prefer socks made of cotton. For athletics, cotton could be the worst material because cotton absorbs perspiration that can keep your feet damp. Damp feet are more likely to get blisters, athlete’s foot or other fungal diseases. Socks made of synthetic fibers are the best choice and there are several types made just for athletes.
Types of Athletic Socks
The right fit is critical for athletic socks. This is not just how they fit the foot but how they fit the sport. People that participate in soccer, baseball and football will want a calf or over-the-calf length sock. Longer socks provide more protection than short sock styles. Those that participate in track and field events will prefer an ankle to calf length sock. Lower cut socks allow for more ankle flexibility and less heat build-up. Another consideration will be the thickness of the sock. Runners will need a thicker sock to help absorb the pounding, their feet endure. People that participate in other types of sports may prefer a thinner sock.
