Tips for Building Barns

Many farms and ranches already have a barn or two but there is always room for more and some homes can use the benefit provided by having a barn built to order. Having this extra room comes in handy when you are doing what you can to take care of your animals and possessions.

Where to Place Your Barn

Before you get started building your barn, you will first have to decide where you are going to place it. Since you will be storing a lot of equipment, feed and possibly animals in your barn, it is best not to place it in a low lying area where rain runoff can cause it to flood.

Storage

Plan the storage space so that you can get to everything easily. When storing feed and hay, the best place is in the center where it is easier to access and you will need an entrance on each end to aid in keeping the feed rotated properly.

Ventilation

It is very important that your barn has adequate ventilation. Animals housed in barns will urinate and defecate in their stalls. Having good ventilation will not allow the gases from these to build up and will help the animals to maintain proper body temperatures.

Lighting

Since you will be spending some time in the barn, having proper lighting is the key to getting whatever work it is you are doing in there done right. Skylights will bring natural light in during the day but having a source of good lighting during cloudy or night time hours is fundamental to being able to take care of animals and other projects you have going on inside.
