Tips for Cement Board Siding Installation

Cement board is hardy, the color can be changed and it looks like wood. It also works better as a sound barrier and is better insulated than vinyl siding. If you have chosen to install cement board siding on your home yourself, be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions completely before beginning your installation. Making sure you are completely prepared ahead of time will save headaches in the long run.

  • Make sure to install a weather barrier such as felt paper or tar paper before putting up your cement board siding.

  • Your cement board must be completely dry when you install it. If cement board siding gets wet before being painted it may swell or buckle.

  • Wear a good quality hepa dust mask when cutting cement board as a lot of dust is created. Try to cut with the wind blowing toward you.

  • Using a diamond blade on your saw works the best for ripping the siding, but power shears are better for short cuts because they create less dust.

  • Prime your cement board before installation and be sure to prime all of the cuts.

  • Pre-drilling the nail holes is not mandatory, but it will help prevent the nails from occasional bending. Use a framing nail gun for quicker installation.

  • Leave a 1/8 inch gap between joints and caulk the gap with paintable latex caulking. This leaves room for expansion and contraction of the siding. Don’t caulk around doors or windows where there is flashing.

  • Hammer nails into each stud. This will ensure your cement board siding is going to stay in place and last as long as possible.
