Tips for Cleaning Windows Inside

Sparkling clean windows make the inside of your home look well cared for and give you a better view to the beauty outdoors. Streaking, dusty windows are something that no one wants to look through. Cleaning your windows a couple of times per year is usually enough to keep them looking great. That is, as long as you do not have little ones’ fingerprints or pets’ nose prints.

  • Choose a cloudy day. The sun will dry the windows before you have a chance to polish them, this will leave behind streaks. On cloudy days, you will have time to polish before they dry.

  • Dust the window, frames and sill before washing.

  • Give the paper towels some time off. Use newspaper or coffee filters instead. Both are less expensive and do not leave behind the lint that paper towels do.

  • Use a new clean chalkboard eraser on windows, after they are washed and dried. This will give them an even better shine.

  • You can make your own window cleaner by mixing water and vinegar. You can add some blue food coloring for color, if you want to. For stronger formula, you may want to add some ammonia. Be sure that you use no-suds ammonia if you use it.

  • Spray your windows until they are covered with a light mist, but not dripping. Wipe in one direction with a clean cloth.

  • Place a cloth on your window sill if it is made from wood. This will protect it from possible damage caused by drips.

  • Cotton swaps work well to clean corners of windows.

  • Wash your windows starting at the top and work your way down.

  • For large windows, a squeegee works well.

  • Wipe the squeegee off on a cloth after each pass over the window, in order to dry it.

  • Wiping a window with newspaper will leave behind a coating that helps to repel dirt and dust.

  • If you have smokers in the house, you may have to wash the windows twice to get all of the effects from the smoke off the windows.
