Tips for Commercial Window Cleaning
While window cleaning isn't a job that most people enjoy, it is important nonetheless because it provides you with an unsoiled view but more importantly it keeps the glass from degrading. Since glass is porous, airborne contaminants permeates windows making it necessary to have them cleaned at least twice a year if you don't want to have to replace them.
- Gather together the right tools for the job. You will need a professional squeegee that has a high quality rubber blade that can be removed and replaced; a cleaning solution that is made of ordinary dish detergent; a bucket that is big enough to fit you squeegee in; a scrubbing wand to quickly soap the windows; and a scraper that is especially designed for glass.
- Fill your bucket with cold water and a small amount of cleaning solution. Put your scrubber into the bucket. Once it is wet, you will want to use it to apply enough liquid to the window so that it won't dry out while you are cleaning it. Start at the edges and use small, circular motions to scrub from the top to the bottom of your window. Use vertical strokes on the inside of the window and horizontal strokes on the outside of the window so that it will be easier to find any streaks.
- Use a professional scraper to scrape debris from your window. Make sure you don't scrape more than 2 or 3 inches of window at a time otherwise you may scratch the window if something gets stuck in your scraper.
- Apply the proper amount of pressure and work at the proper speed to eliminate streaking. You will find out what the right speed and pressure are for you via practice.
- Use your squeegee in a back and forth motion, starting at the top corner. Pull your squeegee to the opposite side and completely dry off the blade each time.
- After you have cleaned your window, make sure to use a soft cloth to clean and dry its edges and sills too. Blot up any small spots or water beads with this same towel. This is called "detailing."
- Whenever there is a lot of water, streaks or lines left on your window you will need to rewash it.
