Tips for Dry Skin Care & Treatment
Dry skin is a problem that is faced by many people. It can lead to embarrassing moments especially during the summer months when legs and arms are exposed. Developing a moisturizing regimen can help to manage dry skin and retain its smooth and healthy glow.
- Avoid harsh soaps. Some people think that using a strong soap will exfoliate the dead skin better. This is actually not true. Harsh soaps only aggravate the problem of dry skin and make it worse. It is best to avoid using soap all together.
- Use a body wash with moisturizer. Dry skin is usually associated with a skin disorder like psoriasis or eczema making the skin very sensitive. Make sure to purchase perfume free and unscented body wash to avoid irritation of the skin.
- Shower or bathe in lukewarm water. Dry skin sufferers are guilty of using hot water in the shower or bath especially during the winter months. The notion that the hotter the water the cleaner the body gets is false. It actually robs the body of its natural oils. Use cooler temperatures and also limit your shower time to 6-7 minutes.
- Pay attention to the ingredients in your moisturizer. A good moisturizer will contain ingredients such as cocoa butter, shea butter, lanolin and petroleum. Apply the moisturizer when your skin is still damp. Expensive is not always better. You can find affordable moisturizers to fit your budget without breaking the bank.
- Drink adequate amounts of water. Consume 6-8 glasses of water per day to keep your skin hydrated.
- Adjust the humidity level in your house. Check the temperature settings on your air conditioner in summer and the furnace in winter to make sure it is not too high. Dry air also dries out the skin.
