Tips for Finding Community Services
Finding community services include reaching out to relevant organizations that assist particular populations with necessary human services. Schools, city agencies, community centers and faith-based organizations are examples of the places to contact to locate a variety of useful services.
- Visit local community centers. In communities centers have been established for local residents to meet, interact, socialize and participate in classes, services are often provided. A group of mothers may collaborate in providing academic enrichment to children. Classes may be offered to educate community members on topics ranging from parenting to computer skills.
- Contact schools and universities. As part of enrichment and developmental programs for students, schools often require that learners initiate or participate in community service projects. If looking for a group of teens to help clean up a neighborhood park, contact a local high school. If a child with learning disabilities needs a math tutor, contact the math department of a university to ask about free tutoring.
- Speak to community-based organizations. These may be privately funded organizations or grassroot initiatives formed to address social issues such as poverty, racism or economic disadvantages.
- Visit faith-based organizations. Churches and spiritual centers often provide services to the community as a way to help people. Feeding the hungry, offering after-school childcare and assistance for the elderly are common activities.
- Contact the city government office. Ask for a list of community services and organizations related to assisting low-income families, cleaning up the city or other relevant activities.
