Tips for Petite Clothing

Many women fall into the category of "petite." While sizes may vary from brand to brand and store to store, women who are considered petite should try to shop in the section labeled petite to find clothing flattering to their body type.

Know Your Body Type

To properly select clothing, know your body type and choose clothing that is flattering to it, emphasizing the strengths and drawing attention away from flaws.

Avoid Large Patterns or Designs

For petite clothing, instead of large designs or patterns on the fabric, select smaller patterns or single colored garments. Large patterns can emphasize a petite figure and make it look even smaller.

Choose a Monochromatic Look in Clothing

When choosing petite clothing, consider a monochromatic look. By sticking with one color, a streamlined and taller look can be achieved. Use of more than one color, such as a top in one color and a skirt or pants in another, can break up the body and make each half look smaller.

Find Pieces of Clothing that Fit Well

When trying on petite clothing, more than one size might be needed. Try on different sizes and select clothing that fits well and isn't baggy or loose.

Look for Clothing that Can Be Hemmed

Many times, petites find that pants and skirts are too long. Choose pants or skirts that are easy to hem, such as those that do not have intricate designs or patterns close to the bottom of them; otherwise, the look may be destroyed or the pattern may have to be completely cut out.
