Tips on Being a Dance Instructor
Becoming a dance instructor can be rewarding and fun. If you have a dance background, this is a great way to make extra money or make it a full-time career. There are a few tips you should try to follow, in order to be successful as a dance instructor.
Not all dance instructors were dancers before becoming teachers; some took lessons so they could open their own studio or teach. The livelihood of dance teachers depends greatly on how well they teach and how well they connect with their students. Use these tips to help yourself become the best dance instructor you can be.
Teach at a level you know well. It would not be a good idea for you to teach an advanced toe ballet class if you have only a basic knowledge of ballet. Stick to what you know, to avoid angry students and a bad reputation.
Work with a studio. Working independently is great, but costly. If you work with a studio, there are other teachers and this cuts your cost, increases the students and allows you to have help available when you need it.
Teach the age range you do best with. If you have no patience for children, then you would not be a good fit for a beginning dance class. Young children have short attention spans and are easily upset. You must have the ability and tools to properly deal with your students. If you love children and the fanciful fairy stage, you will love teaching a pre ballet class where life revolves around fairy princesses and tutus.
