Tips on Exchanging Insurance Information After an Accident

Accidents happen; that’s why they are called accidents.  When you have one, remain calm and exchange information with the other driver.  Whether you are at fault or not, you will still need to exchange insurance information after any accident.  It's important to know a few basic tips to exchange insurance information for all parties involved.

  • If you are uncomfortable getting out of your vehicle for any reason, call the police and wait for their arrival.  A police officer can get the necessary information and make the exchange for you.

  • You do not have to call the police after an accident.  If no one is hurt and both parties agree to exchange insurance information then, eliminating the police is an option.  The insurance companies can figure out the rest.

  • If you feel pressured by the other driver about the accident or exchanging information, call the police.

  • Make sure that you have moved the vehicles out of the flow of traffic.  This is for the safety of everyone involved in the accidents.

  • Have your driver’s license and proof of insurance card handy to give to the policeman or write down the information for the other driver.

  • Accidents can cause your adrenaline to rush.  Try not to let your emotions rule the atmosphere.  Remain calm as you exchange information.

  • There is no need to apologize or agree to pay for any damages, even if you are at fault.  Allow the insurance company to make this decision.

  • You will want to write down the driver’s name, policy number, insurance company and the insurance company’s number to file a claim.  You may also want to make notes about the type of vehicles involved in the accident, where the accident took place and the approximate time of day.

  • Always offer your insurance information to the other driver.  Even if you are not at fault, the other driver will need this information to report a claim.

  • Contact the insurance companies within 12 hours of the accident.  The quicker you file a claim, the quicker you can have your car running like normal.
