Tips on Horse Grooming
Grooming is required to keep a horse in a healthy condition. Regular grooming can prevent a horse from becoming ill or injured. Caring for horses requires time, hard work and money. Making sure the horse’s hygiene needs are met can be fun and rewarding.
Have the Proper Equipment
There are many different types of brushes on the market to comb a horse. Keeping a variety of brushes with soft and stiff bristles will allow a person to brush a horse thoroughly. Try purchasing a horse grooming kit to get most of the grooming items you need. Use a water hose with a sprayer attachment, a sponge and a gentle horse shampoo to bathe the horse. It is a good idea to tie the horse up with a lead rope and put on a halter during the grooming process.
Groom the Horse Daily
Keep an eye out for any injuries or cuts on the horse. These will need to be properly treated right away. If there are any ticks on the horse, be sure to remove them using a pair of tweezers. After the horse has been inspected for pests or injuries, brush their entire body to remove dirt and oil. Brush with a softer brush on the legs and spots with thinner hair. Comb through thicker hair using a brush with stiff bristles.
Check the Horses Hooves and Eyes
Make sure there isn’t any drainage coming out of the horse’s eyes. The horse may need medical attention if there is. Otherwise, use a wash cloth to remove any eye dirt or gunk. Get a pocket knife to remove any debris from the hooves.
