Tips on Keeping Pets Off Kitchen Counters
Pets love to investigate their surroundings by using your counters. They look for food and other interesting things that may catch their eye and then get on the counter for a closer look. Small dogs can also find ways to give themselves a boost. There are many things to do to keep your pets off your kitchen counters.
- Make sure the kitchen counters are cleaned with a cloth and water. Put away all food so the pets cannot smell any aromas. This is usually enough to keep them from jumping on the kitchen counters.
- Watch your bet and observe them from an area where you can see the kitchen counters. If you catch your pet in the act, clap your hand and yell the words "off." This will usually discourage the pets from jumping when you are around. The pets will think twice when you are not around.
- Create a rattle with pennies inside. Use a soda can to place the pennies in and tape it shut. Tie the can to an area near the counters and place soda cans over the top of the can with the pennies in it. Tie food to the other end. When the pet grabs the food the cans will fall and startle the pet. The pet will be startled but not hurt.
- Use a training device such as a large paddle shaped like a mousetrap. It will make a loud sound and the paddle will flip into the air when it is triggered. These types of devices can be found in pet stores.
- Place a mat with raised bumps around the counters. They are usually uncomfortable for the pets and they will avoid those areas.
