Tips on Medical Health Insurance
If you are looking for individual medical insurance for yourself you need to know how to get the best rates along with adequate coverage. All insurance plans are not created equal and if it sounds too good to be true, it may not be insurance but rather a discount card. Therefore, read all the fine print before purchasing.
- Realize that where you live will
directly affect the rates you will pay in your premiums. For
instance, if you live in New York, you will pay much more than
someone that lives in one of the middle states. Therefore, shopping
around for best rates with major insurance companies is necessary. - Never allow previous coverage to
expire until you have your new insurance in place. If you have a
medical condition that was covered under the old insurance plan it
will gain you an exemption for a pre-existing condition. If you
allow the old insurance to lapse, you may not be covered for that
particular condition for a specified number of months. - If you are young and healthy you
can probably get away with basic insurance coverage or one with
higher deductibles. On the other hand, as you get older you need to
lower these deductibles and make sure you are fully covered with
major medical insurance. - You might want to look into a
Health Savings Account or HSA, which is perfect for those that only
see their doctor a couple of times each year and have no major
medical health conditions. The premiums tend to be lower but carry a
higher deductible, the money you put into the account can be used to
pay for medical expenses during the year and once you are 65 you can
actually withdraw any money in the account and use it for what you wish.
