Tips on Shipping with UPS

Many people across the nation trust United Parcel Service, or UPS, to carry packages to both domestic and international destinations. UPS is known for its brown delivery trucks and the slogan: "What can Brown do for you?"  The Georgia-based package delivery company was founded in Seattle, Washington, in 1907.

  • Ship your package in an appropriately-sized box. The box needs to be large enough for 3 to 4 inches of cushion on each side of the package.

  • Cover all labels on the box that do not pertain to the current shipment. Previously used labels can lead to confusion and cause your package to be delivered to the wrong address.

  • Use a sturdy box that will not easily bend or crush. This is particularly true if your are shipping fragile cargo.

  • Remember to place an extra label or contact information inside the box. This will ensure that UPS will be able to continue the delivery or contact you if the packaging is damaged or unreadable.

  • Place cargo that might be damaged by environmental factors, such as water and dirt, in a plastic bag.

  • Consider using an additional box for very fragile items. This is done by placing you package in the first box as normal, and then placing that box into a second, larger one with ample cushioning.

  • Individually cushion multiple fragile items. This will prevent any damage caused by the package's contents coming into contact with each other.

  • Be sure to place objects that contain liquid upright. It is also advisable to place them in a plastic bag as well.

  • Use a durable tape to seal your package and to make seams more firm. Don't hesitate to use plenty of tape, as it is very difficult to apply too much.

  • Do not seal the package with a material that might get caught on conveyor belts; no form of twine or wire should be used, and it is unlikely that they will even be accepted by UPS.
