Tips on Soccer Player Diet and Nutrition
Because soccer is a physically demanding sport, soccer players are likely to become fatigued if they do not provide their bodies with the right nutrients. By eating the proper diet, soccer players can sustain themselves for longer periods while still performing their best.
Drink Liquid
Soccer players sweat a lot, so it's necessary for them to replenish their fluid levels by drinking enough liquids. Being dehydrated adversely affects a soccer player's performance. The longer the time you play on the soccer field, the more fluids you will need to drink. Drink water or an electrolyte/glucose beverage such as Gatorade to stay hydrated. Stay away from caffeinated beverages and soft drinks that act as diuretics and leach fluids from the body.
Eating before Soccer
You'll want to eat a light meal to help provide fuel for your soccer match. Stay away from foods that could cause stomach upset. Do not overeat or eat fatty foods because this will leave you feeling over-satisfied and tired. It's best to eat a meal full of carbohydrates such as whole grains and root vegetables like yams and potatoes right before a soccer match. You can also eat some protein such as fish or chicken. Vegetarian protein sources include nuts and seeds.
Eating after Soccer
Drink enough water to rehydrate yourself after a game. After any heavy exercise like soccer, you will need proteins to help your muscles rebuild. Lean meats and fish can provide this protein. They can be added to complex carbohydrates such as pasta, which can be combined with salads to provide a complete meal that is easy to digest.
