Tips on Storing Clothes in Storage Units

Storing clothes in a storage unit can be a lifesaver if you do not have room in your home to store them; however, if not stored properly, they can be ruined. By following tips on storing clothes in storage units, you can prevent your clothes from being damaged by pests, mold and mildew, while being stored.

  • Wash and dry your clothes before storing them in a storage unit, because perfumes and perspiration attract insects.

  • Store your clothes in a storage unit that is dry, cool, dark and well ventilated throughout the year. If possible, store your clothes in a climate controlled unit and keep the temperature between 50 to 80 degrees year round.

  • Never use vacuum sealed or plastic bags to store clothing, as they can crush the fabrics.

  • Do not use airtight containers to store your clothing, because mold and mildew tend to form around the airtight seal.

  • To deter moths, use a block of cedar or mothballs. Place mothballs in an old sock, so that they cannot come into contact with your clothing.

  • Place a sheet of white tissue paper between folded clothes, so that the dyes in the clothes do not transfer to each other. You can also use tissue paper to line your storage boxes.

  • Place white tissue paper between the creases of folds to prevent the fibers from breaking on the fold lines.

  • Wicker or rattan trunks make good alternatives to storage boxes and an old suitcase can also be used to store folded clothing.

  • Keep ample space between each item that you hang up, as clothing needs room to breathe. Use a wardrobe box or a garment bag for hanging coats, suits and dresses.

  • To absorb moisture and mildew in the storage unit, use silica gel or calcium chloride.
