Tips to Unclog a Garbage Disposal Drain
A clogged garbage disposal in your sink is most often caused by a buildup of food. The buildup makes it impossible for the flywheel to move, therefore making the garbage disposal useless. If this happens, you do not need to replace the disposal, there are few simple steps that will have it up and running in no time at all.
You will need:
- Flashlight
- Wooden spoon or a broom handle
- Hex-head wrench
- Unplug and turn off the power to the disposal.
- Using a flashlight, peer into the disposal to see if there is anything in it that may be preventing the flywheel from moving. If you can see something, use tongs or pliers to remove it.
- Use the hex-head wrench that came with the disposal, or one the same size to manually turn the flywheel. This is done by placing the wrench into the hole that is on the bottom of the disposal.
- Place a wooden spoon or broom handle into the disposal through the drain in the sink to manually turn the flywheel from that position. Move it until it begins to move easily.
- Plug the garbage disposal back in and turn the power back on. Test it to be sure that it is back to proper working condition.
