Tools & Techniques for Cutting Hair

When it comes to cutting hair, it is important that you have the proper basic tools and know the best techniques. Having both of these will help to ensure that you achieve the proper look that you are going for.

Tools

Scissors: There are a variety of scissors available for cutting hair. These include plain straight edged scissors, wide-spaced serrated edged scissors and fine serrated edged scissors. Each pair of scissors is used for a different thing. Plain, straight edged scissors are used for both taper and club cutting techniques. Wide-spaced, serrated edged scissors are used for thinning the hair. The fine, serrated edged scissors can be used for just about all cutting needs, except for if you need to taper cut of side cut.

Clippers: There are two types of clippers used in hair cutting: electric clippers and hand clippers. These are both used when a short haircut is desired, as they can quickly remove the bulk of the hair.

Techniques

Thinning Hair: With this technique, your goal is to either increase the volume of the hair by reducing the weight on the roots or to soften the features of a hairstyle. In order to achieve this, you would make use of a wide-spaced, serrated edged pair of scissors.

Texturizing Hair: Texturizing hair tends to be a very popular technique when styling hair. This is due to the fact that it can result in a variety of different looks. For example, if you wish to give a spiky appearance to short hair you would use your serrated scissors to texturize the short hair.
