Top Bird Hunting Dogs
Bird hunting dogs are dogs that are used to hunt or retrieve birds when hunting. Also known as bird dogs, hunting dogs or gundogs, they have typically been trained to retrieve birds such as doves, grouse, pheasant and other game birds after they have been hunted down.
Pointing Dogs
Pointing dogs are highly disciplined and have been shown to express hunting instincts at as young as two months old. These dogs, such as the medium- to large-sized English Pointers, are known as pointers because they freeze and stand motionless when a game bird has been located, thus allowing the hunter to get into position. Brittanies are medium-sized pointing dogs that are known to exhibit natural hunting and retrieving skills.
Retrievers
Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers are two retriever breeds that can be easily trained and are good with hand signals, thus making them good bird dogs. In addition, their athleticism and enthusiasm make them good companions for hunting as well as at home.
Spaniels
Spaniels, such as English Cocker Spaniels and Springer Spaniels, are medium-sized breeds used for bird hunting. The dogs are had workers and are trained to remain within close proximity to the hunter so that they can see where it falls and flush the prey.
Setters
Irish Setters are a medium- to large-sized breed of dog popular for bird hunting. They are highly intelligent and are noted for their sense of smell. Irish Setters are fast and strong dogs that are also loyal companions.
