Top Children Book Publishers

Children's books have many genres just like adult books do. Because of this, there is not one book publisher that just handles children's books. There are two main types of publishers of children’s books; the big multinational mega publishers. These are usually publishing houses located in New York City that work with millions of authors. The other is an independent publisher that only works with smaller numbers.

  • Random House Children's Books: Random House has 10 divisions within its children's publishing branch. They are known for publishing books by Judy Blume, Phillip Pullman and the Dr. Seuss Books. They except manuscripts only through literary agents only.

  • Simon & Schuster: Simon and Schuster is one of the largest children's publishing companies in the world. They publish mostly for young adult reading. They do consider inquiries as long as it includes a self-addressed envelope.

  • Little Brown Books: Little Brown Books publishes books of all genres and age groups. They publish board books for infants to young adult novels. One of their most popular authors is Louisa May Alcott. They also publish multicultural literature for children in both English and Spanish.

  • Scholastic, Inc.: Scholastic is an independent publisher that has been the largest children's book publisher for decades. Each year, they sound out monthly book ordering catalogs to elementary schools in hopes of making larger sales. One of their most popular books series is Harry Potter.

  • Penguin Putnam: Penguin has over 11 divisions of their company. They publish mostly young adult books but also do picture books and most everything in between. Each of their divisions has different submission guidelines.
