Top Graphic Art Schools
A college degree often gives a potential employee a leg up against candidates that do not have a degree. If you are pursuing a career in graphic design, start your career off right with an undergraduate degree in graphic design. Many schools also offer post-graduate coursework and degree opportunities.
Your undergraduate coursework will arm you with the foundation to help you master such software applications such as Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign. There are a number of schools that offer just such degrees, and even offer specialization in areas such as fine art, animation or interactive media.
- Rhode Island School of Design – located in Providence, RI, this school was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as the top fine arts school in the country for 2008. Small class sizes are a given, as the school has a total enrollment population of under 2,500 students. A benefit of those small class sizes is more direct feedback from professor to student. Enrolled students can also anticipate opportunities to network with visiting designers as well as enroll in internships.
- Cranbook Academy of Art – located in Bloomfield Hills, MI, this school is the graduate art arm of the Cranbrook Educational Community, and was the number two selection of U.S. News & World Report’s 2008 top graphic design colleges. The academy boasts small, studio-based disciplines ranging from architecture to ceramics, and of course, graphic design. Students of the graphic design discipline can choose from 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional studies. The small classes allow students for more direct contact and feedback from their instructors.
- Yale University – located in New Haven, CT and one of the nation’s Ivy League schools, Yale was tied for the number two ranking in the 2008 listing of top graphic design schools by U.S. News & World Report in 2008. Yale boasts great financial aid, and the school’s reputation attracts visiting artists who offer lectures and receptions for students.
