About Buying Engines

Top Things to Know About Buying Engines

Most people rely on a trusted mechanic for major vehicle-related repairs, parts purchases and parts replacements. However, some people prefer to handle these issues on their own. Buying a car engine can be manageable if you are knowledgable and prepared.

Here are a few key points to consider when in the market for a new or used engine:

  1. Be sure fully investigate and research what you can about the engine before making a purchase, especially if buying a used engine. The engine block in particular contains the crank, bearings, rod and pistons, which are the most vital components of the engine itself and will greatly determine the performance of your engine.

  2. While a brand new engine may be the fastest and easiest option, it is also the most costly. Finding an excellent used engine is possible and will only cost a fraction of the price of a new one. If looking at used engines, one with as low mileage as possible is the best option. Also, be sure to get a warranty from the auto-recycling yard.

  3. Re-manufactured engine blocks are also a viable option, again, if you do the proper research. Re-manufacturing an engine block should entail installing new bearings, rings and pistons.

  4. A warranty is a good idea whether purchasing new or used. Be aware that some warranties are contingent upon the engine being installed by a certified mechanic. If you plan on installing the engine yourself, make sure to inquire before purchasing the engine if doing so will alter the warranty coverage and terms.

  5. Engines are also often listed for sale via a private party - eBay, Craigslist, newspaper ads, etc. This should be the last option as it provides the buyer with the least amount of protection and coverage. If you must buy from a third party, do not finalize any sale until a professional mechanic looks at the engine block and approves it. Though it may be a hassle to add this final step, it will potentially save you a bigger hassle in the long run.
