How to Become a Registered Massage Therapist

Training on Medical Massage Therapy

Medical massage therapist is one of the most rewarding jobs in the medical field. This type of position does not require you to earn a medical degree, yet you still help people feel better when they are physically unable to move or are injured.

Classroom Training

When you enroll to complete a medical massage therapy class, you will be required to take a series of science classes that relate to the human anatomy. This is an essential part of training that will help you to understand how the body is made up and what areas you are able to manipulate for pain and tension relief. Additionally, you will learn various aspects of ethics and governing laws, as well as a variety of medical conditions that affect different parts of the body.

Hands-On Training

In addition to the academic training portion of a massage therapy training program, you will be required to complete hands-on training. This type of training allows you to put what you have learned into action. You will learn about patient evaluation in addition to the actual massaging techniques.

Certification

Most states in the United States recognize massage therapy certification. Once you have completed your training, you will test for certification as provided by the certification board that is in control of therapeutic massage. Depending on the state in which you reside and plan to work, you may need to renew your license in as little as every two or three years once you have received it. Check with the local regulations in your state to ensure you are following the correct procedure for continuing education.
