Types Of Hapkido Weapons
Hapkido is a type of martial art, which formed in the early 20th century. It is used as a means of self defense with powerful striking punches and kicks. It's not only about using the body as a weapon, but a number of traditional martial art weapons can be used.
Nunchaku
A Japanese weapon used since the 1600's, the nunchaku is a pair of two hard wood or metal sticks attached to a chain. Many people may recognize the nunchaku with Bruce Lee, who was a master at using them not only in his action films but in real life. In hapkido, the nunchaku is used for self defense and guarding against an opponent's punches.
Cane
A short 3-inch wood cane is used for practice during hapkido training. It is used by masters to guard against a student's hits and also shows the teacher what areas the student needs to work on. The cane may be considered a weapon, but it is really used as such.
Short Sword
Not as often used today, the short sword has been a part of hapkido combat in the early 1900's. Since hapkido is mainly used for self defense, the weapon is yet again mainly used as a guarding routine, especially in modern times. If used as an attack force, the sword is moved in swift fast motions with the user jumping back.
Other hapkido weapons are the police baton, which is used in the same manner as the cane and the rope. Ropes are used to strangle an attacker or for again blocking hits.
